Vesna

Three students (Franek Trefalt, Janez Čuk and Jure Furlan) have figured out how to pass an exam by a strict and unpopular professor (Stane Sever), one of them will seduce his daughter Vesna (Metka Gabrijelčič), and she will give them the test questions. Of course, this comedy of confusions is inevitable. This is roughly the storyline of the film, in which František Čap, a Czech with a very good international reputation, weaved elements of in Germany then very popular Heimat-film and pre-war Czech and Austrian melodramas. There is no trace of socialist slogans (moreover, they are even ironized), Ljubljana is presented as Prague, ambiences ranged from civic apartments to lovely plebeian homes, and the director revealed a whole new gallery of actors who were behaving very naturally in front of the camera. Yugoslavia was fascinated: never before or since did audiences from Croatia or Serbia storm over to see a Slovenian film. Even Marshal Tito paid tribute to the phenomenon and had a reception of the Vesna film crew, so perhaps this is how his later passion for cinema might began. At the first Pula festival in 1954, which was actually a show of four local films, Vesna received an audience award for best film, directing and a leading female role. The Triglav film bosses had no idea that the movie would become such a hit by hiring a Czech emigrant who at the time was not happy with B-films in West Germany, so he gladly accepted the offer from Slovenia. Three years later, with the same cast, Čap also directed the sequel Don't Whisper (Ne čakaj na maj), even more playful and dynamic than its predecessor, which also achieved great success, but the series did not continue because the film star Vesna, Metka Gabrijelčič, gave up her acting career.
