On That Lovely Day

Judging by his career so far, the productive France Štiglic (except for those in Slovenia, he made two films in Macedonia and one in Croatia – The Ninth Circle (Deveti krug), with which he achieved the greatest success), preferred partisan films, dramas and thrillers, but That Beautiful day (Tistega lepega dne, 1962) presents him in a whole new light, as a skilful comedian. The literary template was again the work of Ciril Kosmač (with whom the director had already collaborated on his debut film On Our Own Land (Na svoji zemlji)), and in the lead roles were two of the most popular Slovenian actors, Bert Sotlar and Duša Počkaj (after the Golden Arena for Dance in the Rain (Ples v dežju), she immediately turned into a star of Yugoslavia). The story is played in the time of Italian occupation, somewhere on the Slovenian coast, and the main protagonist Štefuc (Sotlar) does not care about political circumstances; he is more troubled by the fact that his two wives have already died and left him with four children. He has no other option than to marry for the third time, the easiest choice is Zana (Marija Šeme), the youngest sister of his two deceased, but her mother (Angelca Hlebce) considers this as an evil and has already promised her to young Ludvik (Lojze Rozman), who rarely takes off his Italian uniform. The middle-aged, but still attractive Hedvika (Počkaj) is coming back to town, her courtiers present themselves on turns under her window, so also Štefuc starts courting, though he still suffers for Zana. It is only when he realises that the girl has become pregnant with Ludvik, he becomes aware that something needs to change in his sentimental choices. The film has had solid success in Slovenian cinemas, has been seen by over 50,000 viewers (understandably, it is a comedy with two of the most popular actors there), and was well received by the younger generation critics, which for some time kept it neglected to be worth revaluation. It only premiered in Pula in 1963, but remained unrecognised since that year, Igor Pretnar's Wildlings (Samorastniki) won all awards for Slovenia. Author: Nenad Polimac
