Fear

Certainly the most ambitious and attractive Slovenian film of the of the mid-70's. Matjaž Klopčič directed it after the mini-series Blossoms in Autumn ( Cvetje v jeseni) which launched Milena Zupančič into a big star (especially since she had played Meta Preseničekova, one of the most popular characters, but also the most tragic heroines of Slovenian literature), in which he was somewhat budget-constrained, so he made up for it in this costumed disaster movie, which took place at the end of the 19th century and was based on the authentic earthquake that hit Ljubljana at the time. He had reliable associates, such as director of photography Tomislav Pinter, who increasingly worked for foreign producers in those years, and Niki Matula. His hero is Franc (Ljuba Tadic), who after a long absence returned to his hometown, brought with him some fancy prostitutes, bought a nice house and opened a brothel. His fate is tied to two women, one is a mulatto Shirley (Neda Spasojević), he promised her that everything she wanted would come true, but he never kept his promise, while the other is a young Ana (Milena Zupančič), her mother brought her to that "house of sin," but not to become a prostitute, but a maid. Franc is fascinated with Ana, but also does not notice that she likes young Misson (Radko Polič), with whom she would like to run away from Ljubljana. No one ever imagines what will soon happen and how many victims will be killed in the earthquake. The scenes of the disaster are very well done, and Pinter's photography gave the picture a distinct visual procédé. The cameraman later often collaborated with Klopčič, especially in the movie Temptations (Iskanja, 1979). Author: Nenad Polimac
