Funeral Feast

In 1967, the Slovenian director Matjaž Klopčič made his debut with two films, Non-existing Story ( Zgodba ki je ni) and On Paper Wings ( Na papirnatih avionih), but only the latter gave him recognition: at the Pula Film Festival that year, he shared the Silver Arena with Ante Babaja, director of The Birch Tree ( Breza) and received several other awards. He also confirmed his good reputation with his film Funeral Feast ( Sedmina), whose script was written by Ben Zupančič; unlike his romantic and stylized movie On Paper Wings, the latter was a stark war drama. The film, set in Ljubljana in 1941, tells the story of the graduates Niko (Rade Šerbedžija) and Marija (Snežana Nikšić), who do not even suspect that their world will change in an instant because of the Italian occupation. Niko is confused at first, events are happening too fast for him, he also has his first sexual experience with the attractive widow Ana (Ružica Sokić), while his sister Filomena starts an affair with the Italian officer Carlo (Relja Bašić), which many resent her. At first, Niko is politically undetermined, but because of Maria and his friend Popaj (Mirko Bogataj), he joins the resistance movement. His first action ends almost catastrophically, but nevertheless his relationship with Maria becomes even more solid. Klopčič presented this war drama by using the elements of modernist film language, forced time jumps, and occasionally combined color and black and white photography. Although it did not attend major international festivals, it was screened at new Yugoslav film magazines, where it was especially noted by critics of the French film magazine Positif (Bertrand Tavernier and others) and promoted at additional film tribunes. The movie's alternate title is Say Hello to Mary (Pozdravi Mariju). Author: Nenad Polimac
