The Enemy

At the time the The Enemy (Sovražnik, 1965) was filmed, Živojin Pavlović had only two omnibuses that he made with his colleagues from the Belgrade Cinema Club, Raindrops, Waters, Warriors (Kapi, vode, ratnici) and The City (Grad). The latter one was banned, as the only Yugoslav film of that period (it was produced by the Sarajevo Sutjeska film) to be met by such a fate. It has been much more common for a controversial film to end up in the producer's "bunker" and no permission is required to screen it. This is how Pavlović's first feature-length film, The Return (Povratak, 1964), produced by the Avala film in Belgrade, but in the meantime he received an offer to direct in Slovenia: he and a writer Bora Ćosić adapted the story of F. M. Dostoevsky, but adapted it to modern times. The protagonist is the graphic worker Slobodan Antić (Velimir Bata Živojinović), a war veteran who is trying to get the job he has been given as best he can. He is bothered by the negligence of his work colleagues and this is noted by his director (Milivoje Mića Tomić) and he tries to help him at every opportunity. Slobodan, however, becomes a schizophrenic figure, imagining (but perhaps this is also the reality) that he has a double who is completely different from him: that one is a careerist, a hypocrite, exactly like most of the workers in that company. Being that one is like a twin to him, Slobodan cannot convince anyone that he has not changed. The duplicate is constantly causing him trouble until the hero decides to liquidate him. Or is the situation reversed? For the period in which The Enemy (Sovražnik) was made, it was a very subversive film, but not so much that it would not be allowed to screen. Moreover, in the Pula Film Festival, he split the Silver Arena award for directing with Vatroslav Mimica ( Prometheus from the Island of Viševica (Prometej s otoka Viševice)), which made the heads of the Avala Film happy, and they made a new beginning and end to the The Return in 1966 and let it to be distributed.
