We Are Not Angels

It doesn’t happen often that a young director’s graduation film becomes a cinematic hit, but it actually happened to Srđan Dragojević. Despite the fact that Avala Film and Radiotelevizija Beograd were cited as the co-producers, the budget for his fantastic comedy We are not angels (Mi nismo anđeli, 1992) was modest and it is a wonder that this debutant was able to make such a dynamic and humorous movie, even with special effects. The title character of the movie is a young Marina (Milena Pavlović is the daughter of renowned Serbian director Živojin Pavlović) who is trying to force the reckless young man, Nikola, to marry her (Nikola Kojo was already a veteran at the time because he began acting as a boy in the series Part time work (Rad na određeno vrijeme); she became pregnant by him, but the problem is that he does not remember her at all, because so many the girls have already appeared in his life. Although Marina’s best friend Buba (featured by Branka Katić, who is nowadays an actress not only of regional but also of international reputation), supports her, she also causes her problems even when she wants to help her. This awkward trio is being watched from the heights by the Angel (Uroš Đurić, then better known as a painter) and the Devil (Srđan Todorović, son of legendary Bora Todorović, talented young actor and drummer of the cult rock band Ekaterina Velika), who compete for their souls: the Angel cheers on Marina and the Devil would like Nikola to leave her at all costs. It is an escapist movie, but occasionally the reality breaks into its story, as in a scene when Buba exchanges a few humorous replicas with her father in camouflage uniform, ready to be drafted into the army, somewhere in the Balkans. The cast are excellent, as well as the scenery by Aleksandar Denić, photography by Dušan Joksimović and costumes by Hajdana Bulajić. By that time Yugoslavia had already fallen apart, so the movie could not count on viewers in the former republics, but in Serbia and Montenegro it was the most watched, with a total of 90,000 viewers in that year (some sources cite 200,000). Thanks to pirated video tapes, the movie was extremely popular in Croatia and was cited by many as an example of what kind of films young Croatian filmmakers should make. In the new millennium were recorder two more sequels, out of which two were particularly good, also directed by Dragojević. Author: Nenad Polimac
